Problems With Abstract Reasoning

Teachers need to understand that students with AS may demonstrate strong skills, such as an ability to memorize, which may lead to advanced spelling, decoding, and reading vocabulary. This memorization also may aide students in having a strong base of factual knowledge. However, this recall of information should not mask the fact that these students may have difficulty with advanced comprehension. Teachers also may see that students with AS have problems moving from the parts to the whole and making generalizations. This difficulty with abstract reasoning may be particularly true if emotional nuances or multiple meanings are being considered.
